Cançons

Folksongs from Catalonia

Cancons is centered around Catalonian folksongs through Federico Mompou and Miguel Llobet, two of the most prominent composers from the region. The works by Llobet are arrangements of popular folksongs from the region and the works by Mompou are influenced by various Catalonian folksongs.

Below are excerpts from lyrics that would accompany the Llobet folksongs.

El Testament d’Amèlia by Miguel Llobet

També n'hi va sa mare,

Quan no hi ha pus remei.

“Filla, la meva filla,

De quin mal us queixeu?”

Ai, que el meu cor se'm nua

Com un pom de clavells!

Her mother also goes there,

Once nothing more can be done.

“Daughter, oh my daughter,

What illness is afflicting you?

Oh, my heart is becoming knotted

Like a bouquet of carnations!

“Amelia's Last Will”

I ara, que ne sóc grandet,

m'he donat de mala vida!

En sóc posat, a robar:

ofici de cada dia.

Adéu, clavell morenet!

Adéu, estrella del dia!

And now that I am all grown up,

I have chosen an evil path!

I have started to rob people:

(This is) my daily job.

Goodbye, golden carnation!

Goodbye, day star!
